   "Children First"

Main Street Elementary School is located at LaFayette Park in the heart of Waterloo. The warm and friendly environment, exceptional parent involvement, interaction between students of different grades and abilities, and extensive staff collaboration all support the teaching and learning in our school.

Our multiage practices, which are closely aligned with the New York State standards and curriculum, allow students a continuous progression of learning. The integration of ELA, technology, fine arts, character education, and life skills into the content areas allows our staff to focus on concepts and processes, to emphasize higher order of thinking skills, and to build our students' interest and sense of wonder. We have a strong Arts in Education program which includes musical presentations throughout the year, student art shows, field trips, in-house presenters, artists in residence, and a Spring Arts Festival.

The family atmosphere at Main Street Elementary School is predicated on the belief that a collaboration of educators, parents, and community members is necessary to develop the whole child. All parents and extended families are encouraged to become involved in our "Home-School Connection," which includes:

  • A Shared Decision Making Team
  • A Parent Liaison Group
  • Family Activity Nights
  • Classroom and Lunchroom Volunteers
  • Foster Grandparents and Retired Senior Volunteers
  • Our Morning Program.

We welcome EVERYONE to join us each day at 9:05 a.m. for our "Morning Program."

Our instructional and character education programs are based on the founding principles that were established when we opened as a multiage school fourteen years ago...

  • We believe that learning is a lifelong adventure.
  • We believe in facing each day with minds open to knowledge and hearts to love.
  • We believe in the freedom to wonder, to ask, to explore, to imagine, and to create.
  • We believe that success means doing our best, and feeling proud of our effort.
  • We believe that everyone has special talents, and that the talents of each of us help all of us.
  • We believe in ourselves, in each other... in this school.
