13 Questions with Mr. Tim Lincoln

We’re excited to shine a spotlight on Mr. Tim Lincoln, a name familiar to current students, Waterloo alumni, and fans of high school girls basketball alike! Mr. Lincoln not only plays a crucial role in IT operations at Waterloo CSD; as the NYSPHSAA Girls Basketball State Coordinator, his work is crucial to the success of high school athletics state-wide. Here are 13 questions with Mr. Lincoln, which have been lightly edited for clarity and length.

What are your responsibilities here at Waterloo?

All aspects of IT, which includes managing approximately 1,800 staff and student devices, overseeing network switches and routers, maintaining servers, handling the phone system, administering the security card access system, monitoring security cameras, installing software, and much more.

What aspects of the job do you most look forward to each day?

Facing new and unpredictable challenges each day and tackling whatever problems arise.

What characteristics of Waterloo CSD are most meaningful to you?

Hard work, dedication, and loyalty are the core values that shape my approach both professionally and personally. Consistently putting in the effort to go above and beyond expectations reflects my commitment to hard work. Dedication drives me to stay focused and persistent, even when faced with challenges, ensuring that I see tasks through to completion. Loyalty means supporting my colleagues, students, and the Waterloo community, building trust and fostering lasting relationships.

What are your responsibilities as the state coordinator for high school girls basketball?

Liaising with all 11 Sectional Girls Basketball Coordinators throughout the state to ensure effective organization and smooth execution of the NYSPHSAA Girls Basketball State Championships held each March. Additionally, I am the Section V Girls Basketball Coordinator, which involves running the Section V Girls Basketball Tournament in 10 Sectional Classes for over 100 teams.

Can you describe the process that led to you earning that position?

A decade ago, several Sectional Girls Basketball Coordinators encouraged me to pursue the role. Stepping into the NYS Girls Basketball Coordinator role felt like a natural progression in my career.

Where did your passion for basketball come from?

From my early childhood, I enjoyed playing basketball with my dad. Throughout my school years I kept up the sport, and even as an adult I joined pick-up games at the old Middle School on Main Street on Sunday nights.

How meaningful was it to see Waterloo’s girls basketball team win the state title in 2023?

It's hard to put into words. After experiencing the disappointment of losing as a coach in the state finals back in 2005 and witnessing two other Waterloo teams fall short in championship games, finally seeing Waterloo capture the state title brought a flood of emotions—relief, joy, and deep satisfaction. Handing out the Championship medals to those players was one of my proudest moments.

Can you also share about the love of sports and basketball in your family and how meaningful it was to coach your daughters and the role your wife may have played in your years as a coach and coordinator?

Coaching my daughters was both rewarding and challenging. I was fortunate that they excelled as athletes, each going on to play college basketball. Balancing the roles of parent and coach required care, and sometimes the distinctions between the two became unclear. Watching them achieve so much filled me with immense pride. My wife was also an integral part of our basketball journey, diligently keeping the scorebook during games and supporting me in my responsibilities as the State and Sectionals Girls Basketball Coordinator. She assisted in every aspect of those roles, and her eagerness to accompany me on trips made the winter basketball season truly enjoyable for us both.

How have your previous roles helped you in your current roles?

More than three decades ago, I made the decision to move on from Xerox Corporation, where my roles included both Computer Programmer and Electrical Technician in the maintenance department. The skills and knowledge I gained in those capacities have been invaluable, providing a strong foundation for the work I do today.

Who or what inspired you to pursue your current profession?

From the moment I started high school as a freshman, I knew I wanted to pursue a career in computers. I was always fascinated by technology, and when I took a Computer Programming class at BOCES during my junior year, I was completely captivated.

What is your favorite food?

Pizza is definitely my favorite food—I could enjoy it every day! Steak is also a top choice for me, coming in a close second.

What hobbies do you enjoy in your spare time?

Playing golf and spending time with my grandchildren are two of my favorite ways to unwind and enjoy life outside of work. Golf not only gives me a chance to challenge myself and relax outdoors, but it also offers opportunities to connect with friends and savor the peacefulness of the course. Spending time with my grandchildren brings me immense joy; whether we're playing games, exploring new places together, or just sharing stories, those moments are truly priceless.

What is the best advice you have ever received?

Think smarter, don’t work harder—if there’s a more efficient way to get something done, pause and consider your approach instead of jumping in without a plan.
