Ryan Graham, a special education teacher in the Waterloo Central School District for 24 years has been named, the Waterloo Education Association’s 2024 Teacher of the Year.
Graham, who teaches ELA, science, reading and social studies, was recognized during an opening day assembly for staff on Sept. 4.
“I was surprised,” said Graham, who is in his 27th year as a teacher. “ I didn't know until it was announced. I'm very grateful for the award. There are so many great teachers in Waterloo who are deserving of this award, too.”
Graham received several nominations from his peers.
“The students truly love Ryan, he is their biggest advocate,” one nomination stated. “Ryan makes sure that their needs are being met and that they are included in all activities.”
“He tailors his classwork to his program and for each one of the students he teaches,” read another. “He has such a great relationship with his students. They really look up to him and respect him. He goes above and beyond for each student and they know that they can count on him to be there for them.”
Graham said that his stepfather, Dave Smith, who taught at Penn Yan for more than 30 years, and Mrs. Mooney, his 12th grade ELA teacher at Palmyra-Macedon, inspired him to become a teacher.
Graham said there are two things that he enjoys most about his job: “helping the kids that need the most help and the people. I work with great people.”
Graham, who enjoys playing and recording music in his spare time, is especially grateful to his colleagues.
“I'd like to thank everybody at Waterloo Middle School,” he said. “I work with awesome people. It's a great school.”
